Have you ever started working out and then quit? Maybe you lasted a week, a month, two years, but then eventually threw in the towel. You returned to the endless shows and slimy foods. Hey look my spare tire came back! At least I won't die of starvation anytime soon. That away positive Peter. Keep it up! Inspiring.

Will you take some time out of your day and look at my art work?

Yep. I drew that bad boy. It took a few minutes. I know, I know you're impressed. Now let me explain. Those lines are not quite art-deco or Frank Lloyd Wright. Yeah I had one semester of architecture in college in case you were wondering. Too much sitting and not enough iron and steel to hoist and pump. Where is the ESS building again? I know I won't get any calls from the descendants of the Picasso family with interest in my picture and that is okay. I would like to say see those lines? That is volatility. The ups and downs and all arounds. Good days, bad days, ho-hum days, and incredible days. Have you had any? I like them all. Balance.

Since college football starts tomorrow, let's bring this home already! The band is ready to stun the fans at half. So why do people often quit working out? They start out all wide-eyed and bushy tailed and poof. Faster than a dog can crap on the carpet they are gone. I said crap. Where'd so and so go? I dunno, I guess I will do another set of preacher curls in their memory. My art will drastically change the future of exercise habit retention rate until the end of time! Yeah it's that powerful. Can van Gogh do that? Asking for a friend.

The most volatile line of all: Motivation. You know the drill. Go on youtube and watch workout hype videos or see someone who has the body you deeply desire and whammy! Better than speed. You are all charged up to hit the weights forever and ever. Amen! The trouble? None. As long as that high never diminishes. Which it does. It's exhausting to be insanely motivated day after day for years on end. Talk about a buzz kill. Have you ever experienced a motivation dump. You do something spectacular and ride on cloud 9 for awhile and then slam!! You feel like you hit a brick wall and think "oh man, I gotta do that again?" Welcome to the grind kid. Don't let 'em see you sweat on your first cruise.

We cannot maneuver our workout sailboat just on motivation. You will whipsaw like no other. It's too volatile. Picture a guy who's never traded a stock before... "IPO's are safe, right?" Sure thing kid. Why not double down? So what do we need in addition to the windfalls of motivation. A stabler sail if you will. The answer is viewing my artwork of course. This moves us to the discipline line. Now everyone is born with different levels of discipline and it can be trained like a muscle. Do reps! Get to work. You can build a really strong discipline muscle if you put your mind to it. As you can see, from the picture. It's so beautiful I must show it again.

A little smaller this time to really hone in your focus. You can see discipline is much less volatile than motivation, but still has some waves. Understand that discipline is seasonal. There are times for extreme discipline and times to kick back a little. This is healthy! Everything is cyclical in nature and so are you so you might as well get used to it. Unless you are a robot of course and thanks for reading this. Cool. Discipline is on you 100%. No excuses and be who you say you are. No get outta jail free cards here. If you tell your friends, that you are sick of being overweight and that you are going to lose the weight for good. Then do it! Lack of discipline leads to chaos and random results. Go play craps if that is what you are into. If you choose to go that route at least be disciplined enough to roll 7's.

The final line is the anchor, the rock. Do you want to build your house on sand or the Rock. It's your choice unlike shirts and skins. If you dread being on the skins team then listen up! This final dead straight line might be just what you need. The final line is dead straight. No volatility. Why? Because it's damn important that's why! Excuse my excited language. Should of said dang oh well. Offended wimps don't read the BBB blog anyways. Moving on. The straight line is your purpose. This is the magic glue. There is an old saying that if you survive your first heart attack, you will live to be a very old man, or woman. Why? Purpose. Your first heart attack scares the hell out of you and you make changes and don't ever look back. There I go again with the excited language. It turns out that gooey donuts and slimy bacon isn't so enticing after suffering a heart attack. Oops I mean cardiac incident, new accepted name. I just call it "the big one." Whatever floats your boat. Science.

What does a purpose look like? Something like this....

I want to be able to live to see my daughter (or grand daughter) get married.

I want to be able to play with my grandkids.

I don't want to be ashamed of my body anymore.

I want to be a role model to my kids that health is important.

I don't want to get glared at when boarding an airplane because of my size.

I want to be able to run, when most my age can barely walk.

I want to become the very best I can be in competitions (or sports).

I'm sick of having an ugly stomach.

I hate dreading swimsuit season.

I will do anything to feel good again

...and on and on we could go.

You see these are all purposes to take major action and more importantly stick with it. Purpose is your powerful resource to call upon while in distress. When motivation plummets (it will!) and your discipline slacks (you're not infallible) then it is time to re-visit your purpose and it will keep you coming back for more. I have to admit it, your purpose really is powerful. Wow! It's even more powerful than my artwork. It truly pains me to say that. Well that's that. Summer is drifting away, the vines are long, and fall is coming on strong. Time to hit the gong. I tried to be a rapper once. Kickoffs, pumpkins, and pretty leaves are well on their way. Yes! I'm pumped. What are you going to be for Halloween? I think I'll go with the usual. Gym rat.
